Enteringthejourney

SolarTeamTwenteapproacheduswiththeambitiontocreatesomethingentirelynew—afilmconceptthathadneverbeenexploredwithintheteambefore.Fromthatinitialquestion,westarteddevelopingideasandexploringdifferentcreativedirections.Duringpre-production,weconsciouslydecidednottofocuspurelyontheraceitself,butonthepeoplebehindtheprojectandthepreparationleadinguptoSouthAfrica. Byapproachingthedocumentarythisway,thestorybecamelessaboutthesolarcaralone,andmoreabouttheteam,thepressure,andthesharedjourneybehindit.Whatbeganasabrainstormingprocesseventuallyevolvedintotheconceptofproducingafulldocumentary—acinematicandobservationalapproachthatwouldallowtheaudiencetoexperiencethejourneyalongsidetheteamitself.Afterpitchingtheconcept,theprojectwasofficiallysetinmotion.ThisbecamethestartingpointofaprojectinwhichwewouldfollowSolarTeamTwenteoverthecourseofnearlyayear—documentingtheirpreparationsintheNetherlandsleadinguptotheirparticipationintheSasolSolarChallengeinSouthAfrica,ademandingracestretchingfromJohannesburgtoCapeTown.

ProductionphaseintheNetherlands

Withthiscreativedirectionestablished,weenteredtheproductionphaseintheNetherlandsfocusedoncapturingtheworldbehindtheraceitself.Duringthisperiod,wefollowedSolarTeamTwentethroughouttestdays,preparationmoments,teammeetings,andthecontinuousdevelopmentleadinguptoSouthAfrica. Alongsidetheseobservationalmoments,weconsciouslychosetoincorporateinterviewswithdifferentteammembersthroughoutthedocumentary.Ratherthanallowingthestorytorevolvesolelyaroundthesolarcarandthecompetition,theinterviewshelpedbringforwardthepeoplebehindtheproject—theirmotivations,pressure,responsibilities,andpersonalexperiencesthroughouttheprocess.

AftermonthsofpreparationintheNetherlands,itwasfinallytimetoleaveforSouthAfrica.Whatstartedasanideaduringtheearlybrainstormingsessionswasnowturningintoarealjourney—followingSolarTeamTwenteacrossanentirelydifferentenvironment,farawayfromhome. ThemomentwearrivedinJohannesburgtrulymarkedthebeginningoftheadventure.Fromthere,thedocumentaryshiftedintoaconstantlymovingproduction,capturingtheexperienceasitunfoldeddaybyday,inacompletelynewandunfamiliarsetting.

OncetheracepreparationsinSouthAfricawereunderway,thefocusshiftedtowardsdocumentingtheteamasnaturallyaspossible—bothduringthefinalbuild-upandthroughouttheraceitself.Overthecourseoftheeight-dayrace,SolarTeamTwentetravelledfromJohannesburgtoCapeTownwiththeirinnovatedsolarcar,whilewefollowedtheteamcloselyeverystepoftheway.Bystayingclosetotheaction,wewereabletocapturenotonlytheraceitself,butalsotheatmosphere,teamwork,anddedicationbehindthescenes.

Seeingthedocumentaryonthebigscreengavethestoryacompletelynewdimension.Whatstartedasanideahadgrownintoafullexperience,sharedtogetherduringanunforgettableeveninginthecinema.
